Full-Time Tutoring Fellowship (Spanish fluency highly valued) (Lawrence, MA)

Full-Time Tutoring Fellowship (Spanish fluency highly valued) (Lawrence, MA)

Match Corps: Lawrence is an 10.5 month urban education tutoring fellowship. We hired 50 enthusiastic and determined adults to launch the first full-time professional tutoring program in Lawrence, Massachusetts (30 miles from Boston). Although we have met our goal of 50 fellows in Lawrence, we are looking for 5 more fellows for the 2012-2013 school year. These positions are provisional and are pending approval by the district.

Each Fellow will tutor two students at a time for five periods a day and will have a caseload of 12 students all year long. In doing so, tutors not only will be able to drive student achievement by providing individualized instruction, but will be able to build personal and meaningful relationships.

Responsibilities

1. Each Fellow will tutor in math only, and will work with the same 12 students for the entire year (mostly algebra and geometry). Tutors guarantee the academic success of students by focusing intently on individualizing instruction and building personal and meaningful relationships with their students. Tutors will receive all instructional materials, developed by a site-specific curriculum writer, with close alignment among state standards, assessments, and instruction particular to the school. The curriculum writer will preview all materials with tutors the week prior to its delivery to students.

2. Fellows will contact families each week about student progress. This communication forges trust, creates relationships and keeps parents aware of the successes and needs of their children.

3. Each of our two high school sites has a coordinator who will be responsible for observing, training and assisting tutors through the entire year. Tutors will be observed regularly and must be hungry for feedback. The coordinator will walk around during tutorial daily to provide tutors with immediate feedback and also will set aside time to formally observe and provide feedback to every tutor to discuss best practices.

Benefits:Fellows will receive a modest living stipend ($1454 per month, for 11 months). Fellows who have a verified Spanish oral proficiency will receive a $500 bonus.

Who Should Apply? Everyone who applies to Match Corps: Lawrence must have a bachelor's degree. This opportunity is open to any adult who is willing to commit to this intense service year. Successful applicants will include recent college graduates, mid-career individuals, and retirees. We seek a diverse workforce. We want anyone who will commit to work tirelessly for one year to erase, not narrow, the Achievement Gap.
